Exploring Egypt's Tombs

As you have learned, the ancient Egyptians protected a dead pharaoh's body by mummifying it and then placing it in a tomb. The age of pyramids began in the Old Kingdom when the pharaoh Djoser built the first step pyramid to cover his tomb. Pyramid building continued throughout Egypt's history, but the greatest were built in the Old Kingdom.

CONFERENCES are this week! Please RSVP (just a quick reply to this email is enough!) if you are planning to attend on of the ‘Study Skills Success’ session on either Wednesday or Thursday pm at 5:30 and 6:30 so that we will know how many families to expect. We strongly encourage you to attend one of these sessions with your student! We will send home reminders with students that we have scheduled conferences with. If we haven’t schedule an individual conference with you, please feel free to come in during one of our drop-in times, from 5:00-5:30, 6:00-6:30, or 7:00-7:15 on either Wednesday or Thursday.

What's Happening This Week:

Language Arts: We are completing some district testing this week (reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading fluency). We will also be writing a conclusion for the Stargirl paper we’ve been working on.

Weekly work: Book Notes (pages 107-121), Finish 1-paragraph organizer for Stargirl

Social Studies: We will be learning about the time before humans invented writing, called ‘prehistory.’ We will also be practing our map skills by looking at the world’s most populous countries.

Next week will be conferences, on the 12^th and 13^th from 3:15-7:15. We will be sending out a separate email this week giving more details about how to sign up for a conference time.

What's Happening This Week (science and math are included this week, be sure to read all the way to the end!):

Language Arts: Students are working on editing and revising the introductions they are writing for their first writing sample. We are continuing to read Stargirl, and will have literature circle discussions about chapters 14-22 on Thursday. We will also be viewing President Obama’s annual ‘Back to School’ Speech which was aired on Sept. 28^th, and working on setting specific academic goals which will be shared with families next week at conferences. Social Studies: We will finish our study of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and begin learning about the beginnings of human civilization. Students will also become familiar with how to read, interpret and create timelines.

Science: At the end of week 3, students wrapped up their first science unit on circuits and electricity. They have taken a unit test and grades are posted online. Students who aren’t satisfied with their grades may retake the test this week. We have started a new unit on natural resources, including renewable and non-renewable resources. Students had a short check-in quiz last Friday about this topic. They will continue practicing additional vocabulary this week and begin their windmill lab. Those students who are participating in the challenge option are also working on designing and building a solar car.

· The following vocab words should be studied as homework this week to prepare for Friday’s quiz: natural resources, renewable resource, nonrenewable resource, energy resources, fossil fuels, petroleum, natural gas, coal, strip mining, acid precipitation, smog

Math: Mr. Beaudry and Ms. Thill’s math classes have been studying various graphs including line plots, bar graphs, stem/leaf plots and coordinate graphs. This week students will be analyzing graphs and finding the mean (average) of various data sets.

· Homework (due on Friday, to be worked on during 3^rd period math support): Monday page 56-57 #1-4, 7-8. Tuesday page 57 & 61 #5, 6, 10, 20, 21. Wednesday page 58-59 #11, 17. Thursday page 58 & 62 #12, 13, 16, 23. Challenge Option: page 60, #18.

What's Happening This Week:

Language Arts: Students who were prepared on Friday participated in their first literature circle discussion last week. Those who were not prepared lost those class participation points. This week we'll be continuing to work on study skills and time management as we read Stargirl and work on introductions and conclusions for paragraphs.
· Weekly work: Literature Circle Reflections (required as a self-reflection, even if they didn't participate in the discussion), Book Notes (pages 59-89), Single paragraph organizer
· Quiz Monday on Ch. 1-13, Stargirl

Social Studies: We will test our knowledge of the geography of the ancient world, and share the findings of our group research on the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Students who have completed all work and passed all quizzes will be able to create a 'virtual tour' using Google Earth.
· Weekly work: Warmup log, 7 Wonders
· Project: Groups will present their research. Individuals who are ready will do a Google Earth tour. Those who are not ready will be studying and re-taking quizzes or finishing missing work instead.
· Quiz: Ancient World Map Quiz on Wednesday. Next week there will be a 'Jeopardy' style quiz over their knowledge of the 7 Wonders.

Every Tuesday is ‘college day’ attire, and every Friday is ‘Hawk Pride’ blue and gold attire day. We encourage students to wear clothing to show their pride on those days!

What's Happening This Week:

Language Arts: As we continue to read Stargirl, students are learning how to synthesize information and write concise summaries of what they have read. They are also learning how to prepare for literature circle discussions by choosing a couple of unfamiliar vocabulary words to study and answering higher-order thinking questions about the week’s reading.

Weekly work: Book Notes (pages 30-56), Literature Circle Preparation (pages 30-56), Single paragraph organizer

Social Studies: We will continue working on map skills and create and study a map of the ancient world. Students will also learn about the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and research one of those wonders in small groups. Those groups that complete their research cards on Thursday will be able to begin a Google Earth technology project on Friday.

Welcome to the first ‘Weekly Update’ email!

All 6^th grade teachers expect students to write assignments in their planners. Check these for daily updates.

Weekly classwork assignments in Mrs. Beaudry’s language arts and social studies classes are due each Friday. Students who have not completed work by Friday are expected to finish it as homework over the weekend and turn it in no later than Monday.

What's Happening This Week:

Picture day and Open House is this Thursday, Sept. 15^th!

Language Arts: We will finish our first technology project, our ‘Bio Podcast.’ We will also begin reading the novel, 'Stargirl.’ As we read, students will be writing daily summaries and learning how to prepare for literature circle discussions.
