Weekly Update: October 3rd-7th

Announcements/Reminders:

Next week will be conferences, on the 12th and 13th from 3:15-7:15. We will be sending out a separate email this week giving more details about how to sign up for a conference time.

What's Happening This Week (science and math are included this week, be sure to read all the way to the end!):

Language Arts: Students are working on editing and revising the introductions they are writing for their first writing sample. We are continuing to read Stargirl, and will have literature circle discussions about chapters 14-22 on Thursday. We will also be viewing President Obama’s annual ‘Back to School’ Speech which was aired on Sept. 28th, and working on setting specific academic goals which will be shared with families next week at conferences. Social Studies: We will finish our study of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and begin learning about the beginnings of human civilization. Students will also become familiar with how to read, interpret and create timelines.

Science: At the end of week 3, students wrapped up their first science unit on circuits and electricity. They have taken a unit test and grades are posted online. Students who aren’t satisfied with their grades may retake the test this week. We have started a new unit on natural resources, including renewable and non-renewable resources. Students had a short check-in quiz last Friday about this topic. They will continue practicing additional vocabulary this week and begin their windmill lab. Those students who are participating in the challenge option are also working on designing and building a solar car.

· The following vocab words should be studied as homework this week to prepare for Friday’s quiz: natural resources, renewable resource, nonrenewable resource, energy resources, fossil fuels, petroleum, natural gas, coal, strip mining, acid precipitation, smog

Math: Mr. Beaudry and Ms. Thill’s math classes have been studying various graphs including line plots, bar graphs, stem/leaf plots and coordinate graphs. This week students will be analyzing graphs and finding the mean (average) of various data sets.

· Homework (due on Friday, to be worked on during 3rd period math support): Monday page 56-57 #1-4, 7-8. Tuesday page 57 & 61 #5, 6, 10, 20, 21. Wednesday page 58-59 #11, 17. Thursday page 58 & 62 #12, 13, 16, 23. Challenge Option: page 60, #18.
